Setting Printing Options

This section includes:

Adding Print Servers

To add a print server to the Servers list:

  1. Open the Print Assistant window.
  2. Click the Servers tab.

    The Servers tab appears.

  3. Enter the print server's name in the New Server Name field.
  4. Click Add Server.

    The Queues dialog box appears.

  5. If the print server supports the NFS protocol, check the Enable NFS check box.
  6. If the print server supports the Stream protocol, check the Enable Stream check box.
  7. If the print server supports the LPR/LPD protocol, check the Enable LPR/LPD check box.
  8. If you check the Enable LPR/LPD check box, enter the names of the LPR/LPD queues in the New LPR/LPD Queue Name field, and click Add.

    As you click Add, the queue names appear in the Available LPR/LPD Queues list.

  9. Click Close.

    The Queues dialog box closes, and the name of the print server appears in the Servers list.

You can now connect to the desired print server and queue.

Setting Print Assistant Global Options

To set Print Assistant global options, use the Global Options tab in the Print Assistant window.

To set global options:

  1. Open the Print Assistant window.
  2. Click the Global Options tab.

    The Global Options tab appears.

    These entries are default entries only; you can specify different settings in the Connect dialog box when you connect to a specific printer.

  3. To use the same user name for the next new connection, enter the user name in the Default User Name field.
  4. To automatically enable all Reconnect at Startup check boxes for all connections, check the Enable Permanent Connections at Startup check box. To automatically disable all Reconnect at Startup check boxes for all connections, clear the Enable Permanent Connections at Startup check box.
  5. To view warning messages when the network is not working, check the Enable Warnings When Network Is Not Running check box.
  6. Click Close to accept your entries and close the Print Assistant window.

Modifying Print Servers

To enable or disable protocols for print servers that appear in the Servers list in the Servers tab:

  1. Open the Print Assistant window.
  2. In the Servers list in the Servers tab, select the print server you want to modify.
  3. Click the Queues... button.

    The Queues dialog box appears.

  4. Enable and disable the protocols as appropriate.
  5. To accept your changes, click OK. To close the Queues dialog box without accepting your changes, click Cancel.

Modifying Print Connections

To change connection options for parallel ports you have already mapped:

  1. Open the Print Assistant window.
  2. In the Current Connections list, select connection you want to change.
  3. Click the Modify... button.

    Depending on the type of queue, the NFS Modify dialog box, the LPR/LPD Modify dialog box, or the Stream Modify dialog box appears. Change the settings as desired.

  4. To accept your changes, click OK. To close the Modify dialog box without accepting your changes, click Cancel.
