Configuring NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NBT)

You can use Cisco TCP/IP Suite to run NetBIOS applications, like the Windows Clipbook, over a TCP/IP network. You only need to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP if you want to use NetBIOS applications.

To Configure NetBIOS Over TCP/IP, use the NBT tab in the Configuration Utility:

This section includes:

Enabling NetBIOS Over TCP/IP

To enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP:

  1. Start the Configuration Utility and choose the NBT tab.
  2. Check Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (TDI)
  3. If your network uses WINS servers to resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses, enter the addresses of the primary and secondary WINS servers.
  4. Check Enable WINS Proxies if you need your machine to act as a WINS proxy.
  5. Enter a NetBIOS scope ID if your machine is part of a NetBIOS scope, where you can only communicate with other machines that have the same scope ID as yours. Usually the scope ID is blank.
  6. Check Enable NBT DNS to have NetBIOS use DNS servers to resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses.
  7. Select a LAN Adapter (LANA) number if you are using a NetBIOS application that requires you to use a specific number. Windows 95 assigns LANA numbers dynamically, so you generally do not need to select a number. In Windows for Workgroups, Cisco TCP/IP Suite uses 2 as the default LANA number.
  8. When finished with the Configuration Utility, click Done and save your changes.

Disabling NetBIOS Over TCP/IP

To disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP:

  1. Start the Configuration Utility and choose the NBT tab.
  2. Clear Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (TDI).
  3. When finished with the Configuration Utility, click Done and save your changes.

Setting a NetBIOS Name Search Order

To determine how Cisco TCP/IP Suite should try to resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses:

  1. Start the Configuration Utility and choose the NBT tab.
  2. Click the Set button.
  3. Choose the sequence you want Cisco TCP/IP Suite to use for broadcast messages and WINS servers.
  4. Click OK
  5. When finished with the Configuration Utility, click Done and save your changes.
