Testing the Installation

You can verify that the installation and initial configuration of Cisco TCP/IP Suite are successful by using Ping. For additional troubleshooting information, refer to the Troubleshooting chapter in the Using Cisco TCP/IP Suite 100 for Windows guide.

Note

Firewalls often allow Ping to work but not other services such as Telnet or FTP. You may have to contact the network administrator for the remote host for assistance.

  1. Start Ping from the Cisco Suite 100 program group.
  2. Ping the special loopback address of your workstation, 127.0.0.1. This verifies that the Cisco TCP/IP Suite stack is working properly and that it can send and receive messages.
  3. Ping your workstation by IP address. This verifies that your workstation is recognized on the network.
  4. Ping your workstation by host name. This verifies that your workstation is recognized on the network and that its host name is being resolved.
  5. Ping the broadcast address. This verifies that your workstation can communicate with the network.
  6. Ping another host (computer) on the same network by IP address. This verifies that your workstation can communicate with other hosts on the network.
  7. Ping another host on the same network by host name. This verifies that host names are being resolved.
  8. Ping a host on a different network, first by IP address and then by host name. This verifies that the default route is correct and that host names are being resolved.

If all Ping attempts are successful, Cisco TCP/IP Suite is configured correctly and working as it should. If you encounter problems, check your configuration to make sure that you entered all information correctly. You can do this by using the Configuration Utility.

If Cisco TCP/IP Suite installed correctly and the configuration information is correct but you are still experiencing difficulties, refer to the Troubleshooting chapter in the Using Cisco TCP/IP Suite 100 for Windows guide. Your network administrator may also be able to help you. (The Using Cisco TCP/IP Suite 100 for Windows guide is also available in HTML format in the Cisco TCP/IP Suite installation directory and you can view it with Enhanced Mosaic or another network (Web) browser.)
