Over mid term break, winter term 2005, the Structural Geology class traveled to Painted Canyon, near Indio and Palm Springs, California, for a mapping exercise. The San Andreas Fault runs past the end of the canyon and has influenced the rocks there.

Dawn breaks over the Salton Sea campground Saturday morning.

Before we can start we need to get out the air photos...

and make a plan.

Qing guided us through setting the declination on our compasses.

And showed us the fine points of taking strikes and dips.

Nick and Rebecca figure out the dip of a conglomerate layer.

There were lots of faults in the rock units.

The geology was great and the exposure was 100%.

Here's another view.

Some of the layers are no longer horizontal.
