Some notes on the phone at the Field Station Office and In Case of an Emergency
The Gerace Research Center's phone number is a business number and should only be utilized for emergency calls only. For personal calls there is a pay phone available on the GRC campus which can be used with a calling card (AT&T, MCI, or Sprint), pre-paid BATELCO phone cards (available at the GRC), or the student can place a collect call. In the case of an emergency, an individual should call the GRC's number between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. The participant will then return the call. Messages can also be passed on via the Bahamian Telephone Company (BATELCO) at 242.331.2388. It is also worth noting that cell phones do not work on San Salvador and there is no email access at the GRC.

Mail

Packages of any sort should not be sent to students or faculty while at the GRC. All packages will be thoroughly inspected and the import duty is rather high. More significantly, the package will likely not arrive until after the intended recipient has left San Salvador. Mail sent through the Bahamian postal service often takes up to four weeks to reach the island, and vice versa. Mail sent from the Bahamas must use Bahamian postage, which is available at the GRC.

Medical Insurance & Emergency Evacuation

Students receive emergency evacuation & medical insurance through the Field Station at a cost of $1.00 per person per day. This fee is included in the comprehensive fee and is covered by Carleton College (see Insurance Information sheet for details of coverage). Medical facilities on the island are very limited. The insurance covers the cost of a flying ambulance for medical evacuation to a hospital. There is a clinic on San Salvador, and minor medical needs can be taken care of for a modest fee of $50 or less. Participants should be prepared to pay such a fee if they require medical treatment.
