The Gerace Research Station is located on the north coast of San Salvador at the edge of Graham's Harbor. It was originally constructed by the U. S. Navy as a tracking station for nuclear submarines and missiles during the Cold War. Now a part of the College of the Bahamas, it provides facilities for a wide variety of research and hosts students from numerous colleges every year.

Housing

Students are housed in dormitories located in the barracks built by the SeaBees over forty years ago for the Navy personnel stationed on the island at the time. These dorms consist of a number of separate rooms housing a maximum of five students each, in either single or bunk beds. Men's and women's dorms are separate.

Laboratory Facilities

The Gerace Research Center (GRC) has available modest but adequate laboratory classrooms, two air-conditioned lecture rooms with overhead slide projectors and VCRs, a wet lab containing aquariums with circulating sea water, a library, and a specimen repository.

Dining Facilities

The GRC has complete dining facilities for ninety people. The bulk of the food utilized on campus is shipped from Nassau by marine transport or from the United States by air freight. Fresh fruits and vegetables can be limited because the GRC is dependent not only on the availability of supplies from Nassau but also on the supply boat being able to sail from Nassau to deliver produce. Surprisingly, the Bahamas produce very few tropical fruits which is a further limiting the supply of produce. These factors can sometimes result in a somewhat limited menu, however, the kitchen staff work hard to provide well balanced meals, including vegetarian fare (but rarely vegan friendly).

Property Damage Bond

The GRC asks all students to post a $10.00 property damage bond upon arrival to San Salvador. This fee is refunded in full before departure from the island if no damage is incurred by the student or the student's group.
