I
have taught units on Minnesota’s Ojibwe and Dakota tribes to sixth grade
students. Using the Minnesota Historical Society’s Northern Lights textbook as a starting
point, I brought in materials from several other sources such as The Good
Path: Ojibwe learning and activity book for kids by Thomas Peacock and
Marlene Wisuri, videos, and native art. Below is a photo of a visual aid I
created to help students learn the seasonal activities of the Dakota.
During
my second year at Carleton, I did an independent study on American Indian
Education that involved weekly volunteer work at Anishinabe American Indian
Magnet School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I researched the history of native
education in the United States, and kept journals of my experience in a 4/5th
grade classroom. American Indian Education
Independent Study After
completing my project, I continued to volunteer at Anishinabe for two years.
As a service learning coordinator for Carleton’s ACT center, I connected
other professors and students with the school. During my junior year, I wrote
a one-week unit on Christopher Columbus and the “discovery” of America. I
used parts of this lesson in a 7th grade class while student
teaching. |
