September 30-October 6, 2001

Weekly Calendar

Tuesday, Oct 2, 4-5 pm, Olin 04, "The Most Massive Stars: What They Tell Us"

Katy Garmany, Director, Astronomy Program, Columbia University’s Biosphere 2. The most massive stars known range up to almost 100 times the mass of our Sun. These stars are extremely rare, so it might seems that they cannot play an important role in galactic ecology and evolution. However, it turns out that they are very important for a variety of reasons. Dr Garmany will review their impact on other stars and galaxies, with emphasis on how we have learned about them. She will also describe ongoing research that includes undergraduates attending Universe Semester at Columbia University's Biosphere 2 program in Arizona. Discussion will follow and refreshments will be served.
