FYI
Congratulations to Brian Joyce and Maurice Clark on the acceptance of their article, "Asteroid Lightcurve Photometry From Goodsell Observatory," by the Minor Planet Bulletin. It will appear in the December 2002 issue. Look for a copy on the bulletin board in 3rd Olin Lounge.
Nate Hultman, Physics '96, will speak Wednesday, October 2, 4pm in Goodsell 03, on "International climate Policy and The Market For Carbon: Current Status, Financial Aspects, and Ethical Perspectives." Nathan E. Hultman is a doctoral candidate in the Energy and Resources Group (ERG) at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his undergraduate degree in Physics with a concentration in Environmental and Technology Studies (1996) from Carleton College. After doing climatological research at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, he spent a research year as a Fulbright Fellow at the International Meteorological Institute at Stockholm University. He received his M.S. in climate sciences at Berkeley (1999) for a combined ecosystem field measurement and carbon flux modeling study at a field site in the Sierra Nevada and has worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory investigating energy technology cost trajectories. Hultman's current research focuses on international climate policy, financial risk, and emissions trading, though his research interests also include renewable energy technologies and policies; electricity and energy markets; and equity implications of atmospheric property rights allocations. He has attended the UN Conferences on Climate Change at Kyoto, Buenos Aires, the Hague, and Marrakech, Morocco. He was an author of a policy piece on climate equity in the journal Science and serves on the advisory board of the non-profit organization EcoEquity. Hultman is also Energy Commissioner to the Mayor of the City of Berkeley.
$2,000 Lotze Scholarship "The American Association of Physics Teachers is offering a $2,000 scholarship for future high-school physics teachers. This scholarship, supported by an endowment funded by Barbara Lotze, is available only to U.S. citizens attending a U.S. school. Undergraduate students in, or planning to enter, physics teacher preparation curricula and high-school seniors planning to enter such curricula are eligible. Successful applicants, normally one per year, will receive a stipend of up to $2,000. The scholarship may be granted to an individual for each of four years.
