Hello Students Workers!  Welcome to the Physics Department or welcome back.  Please check with your supervisor soon to arrange your work schedule.  Timesheets will be kept in a binder on the shelve outside the department office (Olin 331).  We are looking forward to another great year.  Any questions, ask Ann or Arjendu.

 

SDAs Student Departmental Advisors for 2003-04 are Brynn Barile and Clark Ritz.  SDAs are available to all students, especially new students who want to talk to a knowledgeable and experienced upperclass student about physics and astronomy courses and registration.  Please give them a call if you want the real scoop from a studentÕs perspective.

 

03 Summer Survey due Wednesday, Sept 18.  Juniors and seniors: please return the Òbright greenÕ sheet that was placed in your mailbox ASAP.  Email will also work: apasse@carleton.edu.  Thank you.

 

Seniors:  National Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship applications are now available. These awards are for students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science, math and engineering.  Deadline for application is November 4, 2003.  Check out the web site for information and access to the electronic application:  http://www.orau.org/nsf/nsffel.htm 

All applicants are expected to apply electronically.

 

Catch the Wave!  Nelson Christensen will be giving a talk, ÒGravitational RadiationÓ September 24, 3:30-4:30 p.m., 170 St. Olaf Science Center.  This talk will describe gravitational radiation.  Specifically, he will talk about what it is, how it is produced, and how it can be detected. The performance and goals of the Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) will also be given. 

 

The deadline for materials to be included in Radiations is noon Thursday prior to the week you would like the information to appear.
