COMMENTS:

* Funnest job on campus: Joel and Cindy are looking for someone to shovel snow off the 16" dome to keep it from freezing up for the whole winter. The lucky person will have the job for the rest of fall term and all of winter term. Be the envy of your classmates. Good views! High pay! Contact Cindy or Joel if you are interested.

* Volunteers needed: If you are a major and would like to have your name listed on our department majors Web page, please let Rebecca know. You may choose to have a link to your email or not. The junior class, in particular, is underrepresented on our pages. You may email permission to rtollefs@carleton.edu, or just mention it to Rebecca in the office. Thanks!

* Summer Internship: National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The deadline is January 20, 1997. For more information, see the poster on the bulletin board in Mudd. Bill Titus has a limited number of the application forms.

Winter break jobs

The department is offering the following winter break positions. They both pay the standard student rate of $6.44 / hour. Contact the supervisor for more details. Submit an application to the chosen supervisor by this Wednesday October 30, stating why you are interested in this position and relevant experience and background. You will be notified of the outcome by Friday, November 1. (Note that applications for housing are due by Monday, November 4. You must work a minimum of 20 hours per week or live more than 450 miles away to be eligible for College housing.) Both jobs may involve some shoveling of the 16" telescope dome.

Doug Foxgrover
20 hours/week for two weeks

We have an opportunity to upgrade some of the software packages on our Macs. This will include MS Word, MS Excel, and some Internet applications. In addition, our P122 lab manual will need to be rewritten to reflect the changes required by the new programs. You should be comfortable working on Macs, and especially in Word and Excel.

Rich Noer
20-40 hours/week for three weeks

I need someone to help check out some new experiments using our ultrahigh vacuum system. These include photoelectric measurements (aim light at a sample and collect the photoelectrons), secondary electron emission (aim the beam from an electron gun at a sample and collect the secondary electrons), sputter etching (aim an Ar ion beam at a sample to clean its surface), and x-ray spectroscopy (aim an electron beam at a sample and analyze the energies of the emitted x rays). Minimum background needed: Physics 128 and 240.
