FYI

The Hertz Foundation's Graduate Fellowship Award, which is based on merit (not need) consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend. The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the tenable schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Hertz Fellows therefore have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among tenable schools. The personal stipend, paid over the nine-month academic year, is $25,000 for Fellowships awarded for the 2003-2004 academic year. The Fellowship award is renewable annually (upon a showing of satisfactory progress toward receipt of the Ph.D. degree) for a total Fellowship tenure of no more than five years. Fellows must attend one of the Foundation's tenable schools. Applicants must be applying for or be presently enrolled in a Ph.D. program. For more information and application, see: http://www.hertzfndn.org/awards.html The application deadline is November 1, 2002.

Ponder: The awesome power of our dean was evidenced once again on Thursday morning! While many of the staff from Astronomy & Physics along with staff from Psychology, were shivering outside due to a fire alarm, our fearless leader was seen approaching from the direction of the Bald Spot. As he approached the doors the alarms shut off and the all-clear was given, such that he did not even have to break stride before entering the building.

We all express our heartfelt gratitude to the way our most gracious leader saved us from becoming a cluster of ice statues around the entrances.
