FYI

Volunteers Needed: Rebecca is still looking for majors willing to have their email addresses appear on the departmental web pages as student contacts for prospies and others looking at our program. We have a few seniors and one junior listed now, but need more junior and sophomore volunteers. Email rtollefs if youčre willing.

All Science Poster Session: On Friday, October 8 at 3:30 p.m. on first floor Hulings the science departments will be holding an all-science poster session on summer research. If you worked on a research project this summer either here or off-campus, you are strongly encouraged to prepare a poster to present. Please see Cindy soon if you are interested.

Summer Internship: National Radio Astronomy Observatory Summer Student Research Assistantships. For more information see the bulletin board in the Student Lounge, or http://www.cv.nrao.edu/~awootten/summer-students.html. Deadline: January 20, 2000.

Smile! Bill will be taking pictures of junior and senior majors and sophomores in Physics 128 for posting on our departmental bulletin board. Please help him out by being cooperative. Thanks!

Cool Web Page: Help for Physics Students is "an eclectic but useful collection" of links to interesting physics-related sites (including problem solutions and physics humor). Loads of neat stuff for students at all levels. Check it out at http://www.cyberspc.mb.ca/~dcc/phys/physhelp.html.

Science Fiction Alliance Events: The Science Fiction Alliance, advised by Bill and literal home of three physics majors (Mike Borchert, Abby Hedden, and Becky Weisgerber are living in SFHouse this year) is having lots of cool events really soon led by physics majors.

1. Saturday, October 2nd, beginning at 11:00 a.m., on the Chapel lawn. In conjunction with the Y2K/Apocalypse theme, Becky is running a Post-Apocalyptic Survival Skills Fair, Pottery begins at 11:00, other events in the afternoon. Lots of hands-on activities include:

o making a pot with native-dug clay and firing it with actual fire;
o straw basket-weaving with native grasses gathered from the Arb;
o Nelson is thinking about demonstrating brewing (because if you could make alcohol after civilization fell, you would be a god);
o something with candles, either decorating or actually pouring your own;
o spinning;
o dyeing wool with black walnuts from Scoville;
o and of course, the requisite fire-starting.

Possibles include metalsmithing and found-shelter, and soap. Carleton students don't often let themselves play, and this is a great way to get your hands dirty and try something you always wanted to do.

2. Friday October 8, 7 p.m., Benton House Lounge: Mike is running the first of the Apocalyptic Tie-Ins: Nuclear Holocaust Night with the SFA! Yay! He'll be showing Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb; and also the Weird Al music video, Christmas at Ground Zero. He's looking into getting a PoliSci prof to declaim on the likelihood and implications of all this.

3. Friday Oct 22, ?:00, Benton: Apocalypse Night Two: Natural Disasters! More information to follow.
