October 20,  Mid-term Break!

October 22, Iowa State Engineering Programs

       Wednesday, 10:30 a.m.-noon

Any students interested in hearing about graduate engineering programs at Iowa State should come and talk to their representative.  See Nelson for an appointment.

October 22, ÒWhat is a photon anyway?Ó

       Wednesday, 3:10-4:20 p.m., Olin 04

Mark Schneider, Professor of Physics at Grinnell College and Carleton Class of 1977, will give a talk on Wednesday, October 22 from 3:10 pm until 4:20 pm in Olin 04.  The title of MarkÕs talk is  "What is a photon anyway?" and this is a summary that he has sent:

I will give a quick overview of the theory of photon interference, and then talk about how that theory is expressed in some simple experiments.  In the process I'll talk about beam splitters, and "which-way" marking in interference experiments--how that marking destroys the interference pattern, and how the interference can be restored with a "quantum eraser."  It will make the most sense to a student who has had a little intro to quantum mechanics (in particular, a little bit about the 1D harmonic oscillator and maybe a brief touch with quantum double slit interference), but I hope there will be some intelligible moments even for quantum neophytes who know a little bit of waves and optics.  I'll aim for 50 minutes.

 October 23, Physics Table

Thursday, 12:00-1:00 p.m., LDC 113 (Fireplace Room)

All physics students are invited to join the Department faculty and staff for lunch and interesting conversation.  We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:55 for the short walk to the dinning hall or you can join us there.

October 24, Department Picnic

Friday, 4:00-6:00 p.m., Hill of Three Oaks (Super Lounge in case of rain or snow)

YouÕre all welcome to join in the fun and food.  There is a sign-up sheet by the mailboxes for those not in Physics classes this term.
