1. You are invited to a party of the centuries! A Gala Galileo Gathering will be held on Monday, October 23 in Goodsell Observatory and Olin Hall. Beginning at 6:45 pm, come enjoy Saturn's thin rings and Jupiter's Galilean moons through the 16" telescope and telescopes on the new outdoor observing site. Should the heavens fail to cooperate and clouds obscure our view, alternate solar system amusement will be provided. Following the parade of planets, come to Olin 141 for further frivolity including some conversations between pseudo-Galileans, a crash course in Italian for the Semi-Modern Scientist and an assortment of delectable refreshments.
2. Internship Information Cornell University Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences will have a summer program of Undergraduate Research Assistantships in Astronomy. Research projects cover a wide range of topics in radio, infrared and radar astronomy. First, second and third year undergraduates are eligible and applications are due by 9 February 1996. For further information see the bulletin on second floor or contact Sue Chamberlain by e-mail at chamberl@astrosun.tn.cornell.edu.
3. Summer Research Opportunity Indiana University Cyclotron Facility is sponsoring its ninth annual Undergraduate Research in Nuclear Physics Summer Program. Research project will be in the areas of experimental and theoretical nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry. Physics majors who have completed their sophomore or junior year are eligible and application material are due on 16 February 1996. See Cindy Blaha for further information and applications.
4. Interested in engineering? In the next few weeks we will have visits by representatives of both of the engineering schools with which we have formal connections. Franklin Johnson (Washington University) will be on campus Thursday, October 26. James Erwin (Columbia University) will be here Thursday, November 9. Both are primarily interested in talking with students considering the 3-2 Combined Plan (3 years at Carleton, 2 at engineering school). But both have expressed a secondary interest in students intending to stay at Carleton for 4 years, then go on for further study in engineering. These will be excellent opportunities for you to find out more about these particular programs and about engineering in general. Contact Bruce Thomas (Olin 3432, x4389, STRONG>BTHOMAS) for more information and/or to schedule an appointment.
5. Many thanks to Brian Geyer and Tyler Rooker for an excellent, well organized, and fun picnic!
