FYI

Comps Reminder: October 16 is the first comps deadline. A brief written report of your progress in selecting a comps topic is due Wednesday October 16. This should be submitted to Ann Passe.

Physics Talk: "Linear Induction Motor Propulsion for Pneumatic Capsule Pipeline Freight Transportation," Robert M. O'Connell (Tim's Dad), Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Missouri
The excessive use of trucks to transport freight causes problems such as air and noise pollution, premature road damage, excessive fuel consumption, traffic congestion, and safety concerns. In addition, trucks and other surface and air modes of transporting freight are subject to hijacking and terrorist attacks. All of these problems can be alleviated by shipping a portion of the freight, including valuable and militarily sensitive material, in underground pipelines.
October 24, 2002, 1:00 &endash; 2:00 pm, Olin 02
Students interested in engineering studies are invited to visit with Professor O'Connell following the talk in the Olin 2nd floor student lounge. Refreshments will be available.

Science Night At Carleton Lecture Series The third in a series of four lectures by young science professors at Carleton will be October 24, "Particulate Matter in the Environment: Air Pollution, Health Effects, and Measurement Techniques," Deborah Gross, Assistant Professor of Chemistry

The lectures are about cutting edge topics in science. These presentations are designed for the general public so listeners are not required to have a technical background in the fields being discussed. All lectures will be given in Olin 141 at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings.
