October 12-18, 2003

Weekly Calendar

 October 16, Physics Table

Thursday, 12:00-1:00 p.m., LDC 113 (Fireplace Room)

All physics students are invited to join the Department faculty and staff for lunch.  We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:55 for the short walk to the dinning hall or you can join us there.

October 17, Colloquium

Friday, 3:30-4:30p.m., Olin 02

Our colloquium series this fall will be primarily students reporting on their summer research experiences.  Come to hear about the interesting work.  Come to hear about opportunities for summer research in your future.  Come for the refreshments.

Aleks Diamond-Stanic Ð ÒPoststarburst Quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky SurveyÓ

I spent 9 weeks of my summer in Laramie, WY, as part of the astronomy REU program at the University of Wyoming.  My research was on quasars, the most luminous objects in the universe.  Quasars are believed to be supermassive black holes that sit at the center of distant galaxies and consume nearby matter.  I used the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to search for quasars with unique spectral properties indicative of massive starburst populations in the quasar host galaxies.

Charlotte Christensen Ð ÒSource Identification verses Source Discrimination in Sound LocalizationÓ

There are many different methods to study the localization of sound.  One is a source identification method in which the subject is asked to identify the source of a stimulus from an array of possible speakers.  Another method, source discrimination involves the comparison of the relative source location of two different sequential stimuli.  The purpose of this experiment was to compare these two methods and use the results of the former to predict the results of the latter.  A discrepancy between the source discrimination results predicted from the source identification results and the actual results could indicate the use of different modes of memory operation for source identification and source discrimination.

FYI

Iowa State Engineering Programs.  Any students interested in hearing about graduate engineering programs at Iowa State should come and talk to their representative. She will be here at Carleton from 10:30 to noon on Wednesday October 22. See Nelson for an appointment.

Physics Department Picnic. Both the Hill of Three Oaks and the Goodhue Super-lounge have been reserved for Friday, Oct. 24, from 4-8pm.  We figured that if the weather is too bitter cold we could hold the picnic indoors.  As for the food, food preference sign-up sheets will be passed around.  Watch your email and Radiations for more information.
