       Monday, 1:50-3:00 p.m., Olin 141

Tom Moore, Carleton '76, Professor of Physics at Pomona College, and author of your Physics 115 textbook is giving a couple of talks in the Department on Monday Nov 3rd, ÒGeneral Relativity in a Nutshell,Ó aimed at approximately the level of Physics 115 students during 5a, Olin 141.

Tom Moore,  ÒComputational General RelativityÓ

Monday, 3:30 p.m., Olin 04

Be there (think of when you come back for your talks in 27 years :-)!  Refreshments etc. will be on hand as usual.

November 4, SDA Lunch

Tuesday, noon-1:p.m., Olin 2nd Floor Lounge

Meet the Student Department Advisors, Brynn Barile and Clark Ritz, and munch on Pizza.  Find out about the major, learn about the classes and meet more physics people.

November 5 - 7, James Trefil - Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar

Wednesday, Nov 5, Lunch with Physics students and faculty, Noon-1p.m.

Wednesday, Nov 5:  Office Hour & Tea Time, 3:00-4:30 p.m., Olin 202,

Share cookies and discussion with students and faculty on topics such as:  What it is like to be a writer; How science works; Graduate school and careers in the sciences.

Thursday,  November 6, Public Talk:  ÒWho Killed the Dinosaures:  A

Scientific Detective StoryÓ, 7:00 p.m., Olin 149.

Friday, Nov 7, Breakfast with students, 8:30-9:30 a.m.,LDC,

November 6, Physics Table

Thursday, 12:00-1:00 p.m., LDC 113 (Fireplace Room)

All physics students are invited to join the Department faculty and staff for lunch and interesting conversation.  We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:55 for the short walk to the dinning hall or you can join us there.

November 7, Goodsell Open House

Friday, 7:00 Ð 9:00 pm

Come enjoy some fine celestial sights during our regularly scheduled open house.  If the sky is clear, observing targets will be the Moon, Mars, double stars and globular clusters.

Novermber 8, Goodsell Observatory Open House, Total Lunar Eclipse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

       Saturday, 6:30 - 7:30 pm

Enjoy a really good show on Saturday, November 8 (if the weather cooperates).  A total lunar eclipse will occur in the early evening.  The full Moon will rise at sunset with the early phases of the eclipse already underway.  The Moon will begin to enter the darkest part of the EarthÕs shadow near 5:30 pm.  Totality begins at 7:00 and lasts until 7:30 pm.  This show will be visible from any spot with a good view of the east southeastern sky, provided we have clear skies, but telescopes at the observatory will be open from 6:30 to 8:30p pm for your viewing pleasure.

FYI

Seniors:  Arjendu wants to let you know that he will not be available from Nov 21 -- Dec 23, so if anyone needs letters of recommendation with deadlines during that time, now would be a good time to let him know.
