Weekly Bulletin May 9 - May 16
- Thursday, May 11 12:30 p.m. CTR
- PHYSICS/ASTRONOMY TABLE: Meet in Olin 309 at 12:20 p.m. for the walk to the CTR or join us there.
- Thursday, May 11 4:30 p.m. Mudd 60
- Professor Hal Feiveson from Princeton University will give a talk
"Nuclear Weapons Proliferation and the Future of Nuclear Power. All are
welcome.
- Monday, May 15 3:10 p.m. Olin 109
- SPECIAL TALK: Dr. E.J. Zita (Carleton '83) an assistant professor at Grinnell College will speak on her research on the dynamics of stellar interiors. She sent the following abstract of her talk: "Certain star, including our sun, "ring" with sound waves or "acoustic modes".
In the sun, convection drives these modes. However, some nonconvective stars also "ring". What drives acoustic modes in rapidly oscillating, peculiar A-type stars? Observers have long suspected a link to the stars' magnetic fields. I conjecture that oscillations about a magnetic energy minimum may account for the observed, unexplained "ringing" of such stars. My investigations may also lead to a magnetic dynamo model for these stars.
- Friday, May 19 5:30 p.m. Hill of 2 Oaks
- PHYSICS/ASTRONOMY PICNIC: See note below for details.
COMMENTS:

department--glad to have you! Jonathan Bougie, Peter Czoschke, Richard
Elliott, Christina Ellis, Brian Geyer, Karen Griffith, Erika Hansen, Craig
Heinke, Carolyn Jackson, Daniel Narvaes, and Tyler Rooker.
2. PHYSICS COOK-OUT!! Friday, May 19 on the Hill at 5:30 p.m. Doesn't matter if you're on board or not the department will pay for your food. It's a great excuse to be outside and relax. ?'s call or E-mail Keith J (5042 or johnsonk), Mark D (5274 or deiterim) or Karl V (4601 or vollmerk). You need to sign up by THURSDAY, MAY 11. Sign up sheets are in Olin or you can call 4383 and leave your name and id# and whether you would like a vegetarian meal?.
3. SENIORS: It is a tradition for graduating physics seniors and faculty to take a canoe trip down the Cannon River the Thursday before graduation. Please hold that date.
4. Computational Physics Workshop: Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge is offering a workshop in computer modeling, to be held July 17-28. All expenses are covered, but there is no stipend. Applications are due May 15. See the bulletin board on 2nd floor or Steve for info.
