Radiations

Department of Physics and Astronomy

Carleton College

May 27-June 9, 2001

This will be the final Radiations for the 2000-01 academic year. Its been a wonderful year in the department. The students have been brilliant, as usual, and the staff outstanding. Next year we will miss Jennifer and Ignacio and the energy and enthusiasm they bring to physics and astronomy. We wish them well with their new teaching positions at Morehead State University, Morehead KY. Richard Noer and Kevin Pettit will be returning next year to resume their teaching duties in the department. We also will be welcoming two new faculty members, Arjendu Pattanayak and Maurice Clark.

Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you in the Fall of 2001.

Weekly Calendar

Friday, June 1, 10-12 p.m. , Goodsell Open House

Tuesday, June 5, Noon, Kings Room, Senior Lunch

We would like to invite you to a lunch in your honor on Tuesday, June 5 at the St. Olaf's King's Room from noon to 1:30 p.m. This is a buffet lunch, so there will be lots of different kinds of food choices, depending on your diet.

Please let Ann Passe know by Monday, June 4 whether or not you are coming. We need to make reservations and thus need an accurate count. Also tell Ann whether or not you will need transportation up to St. Olaf. All of us in the department hope you can attend this first annual, Senior Lunch for Physics/Astronomy Majors. You are an impressive group of students who we will truly miss!

Thursday, June 7, 8:30 a.m., Senior Canoe Trip

The culminating experience of your physics major! Yes, it's almost time for the historic annual senior physics event: the Cannon River Canoe Trip! You are hereby invited own to join friends and faculty in an exploration of the wilderness between Cannon Falls and Welch, We'll leave from the lobby outside the Olin Auditorium at 8:30 a.m., and drive to Cannon Falls, where we'll leave our cars. From there it's an easy 3-hour paddle (longer if you turn over, or get lost in the shortcuts) on the scenic route to Welch. We'll stop for lunch on the way. Then the outfitter will bring us back to Cannon Falls where we left our cars. We'll arrive back at Carleton no later than 3:00.. Please join us! The cost? A paltry $12.50 per person (a little less if we come en masse!). No canoeing experience is necessary (it's even more fun that way). Bring the cash, sunscreen, clothes that won't mind water and mud, and a lunch. Have a special friend who'll be jealous if left out? Bring her or him too!

Please let us know by Monday if you will be joining us. We need to make reservations apasse@carleton.edu

Saturday, June 9, 9:30 a.m., Commencement Ceremony

Graduation ceremonies will be on the lawn west of Hulings Hall. Seniors need to assemble between Olin hall and Boliou Hall at 8:30 a.m.

FYI

Senior Questionnaire. Ann is still missing information from seniors, and you know who you are. Avoid the dreaded "no information available" after your name in the Department Annual Summary.

Sophomore & Junior Survey Please return the completed form either on paper or email. Ann will continue to pester you until she knows the answers.

Time sheets Remember to enter and total your hours and a signature on your time sheet before you leave campus. The binder will be cleaned-out at the end of the term and incomplete time sheets will be recycled.
