Weekly Bulletin September 27 - October 3, 1995

Tuesday, September 26 Noon CTR
PHYSICS / ASTRONOMY TABLE: Meet in Olin 309 at 11:50 a.m. for the walk to the CTR or join us there at noon.
Thursday, September 28 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Great Space
PEACE CORPS representatives on campus: Visit the information table. A film and information seminar will be held a 4:00 p.m. in Sayles Hill Room 253.
Friday, September 25 3:30 p.m. Bio Bldg Atrium
ALL-SCIENCE POSTER SESSION: Drop in between 3:30 and 4:30 for food and conversation as Carleton science students display their research. This is an excellent way to find out about internship experiences.

COMMENTS:

1. Argonne Symposium Majors , consider going to the Argonne Symposium for Undergraduates in Science, Engineering and Mathematics November 3-4 at Argonne National Laboratory. See Joel Weisberg for information on registration and abstracts submissions. Note that the deadline for submission of abstracts is October 2 .

2. Student Research Grants Available A reminder that the college has set aside money to be used in support of student travel to work on projects, conduct research and attend conferences. The college will award up to $500 for a successful proposal. For information contact the Associate Dean of the College, Elizabeth Ciner at x4300.

3. Help Wanted We need two senior majors to serve on the DCC (Departmental Curriculum Committee). It's a non-onerous, often interesting, occasionally power-wielding assignment. To volunteer, contact Paolo Dini by Friday .

4. Conference Trip The annual Nobel Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College focuses this year on "The New Shape of Matter: Materials Challenge Science". Speakers include physics Nobelists Philip Anderson (Princeton) and P.-G. de Gennes (College de France), physicists Silvan Schweber (Brandeis) and Susan Coopersmith (Bell Labs), a couple of chemists and a philosopher. Dates are Tues. and Wed., Oct. 3 & 4. (You can find more details on the Internet: http://www.gac.edu/nobel/1995/ ) An undetermined number of cars, faculty and students will probably be making one or more pilgrimages on either or both of those days (how's that for decisiveness!). The ride takes about 45 minutes each way. We'll pay the fee and take care of the registration, but we need to know who might be interested in going. You? If so, contact Steve Durbin preferably by Friday.

5. Sophomores and Juniors: The Barry Goldwater Scholarship Foundation is awarding $7000 scholarships for students who have excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in math, natural science and engineering. Contact Prof. Jeff Ondich, Math / CS, x4364, if interested.

6. Seniors--What next? Are you beginning to look for a job and/or are thinking that you might be interested in engineering? Here's a golden opportunity for you. Talk to Ray Bunkofske next Tuesday or Wednesday (Oct. 3-4). Ray graduated from Carleton in 1981 and then completed a master's degree in mechanical engineering at the U. of Illinois. He's worked at IBM since then, but that includes being paid to finish a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the U. of Minnesota (a nice fringe benefit!). So he's knowledgeable about a lot of subjects: Illinois, Minnesota, engineering, industrial employment,....And he's an enthusiastic believer in the value of a liberal arts background for engineering. And most important, he's in Minnesota for a few days because IBM intends to hire a few hundred (!) process engineers and computer programmers in the near future. If, for any of the reasons I have cited, you are interested in interacting with him, contact Bruce Thomas for details.

7. Juniors and Sophomores Ray (see above) has also mentioned the possibility of summer positions for you. Contact Bruce Thomas

8. NSF Graduate Fellowship Application information will be available in "late September" and for the first time will be distributed by NSF's electronic publishing system STIS (Science and Technology Information System). The earliest application deadline is 6 November 1995. Directions regarding the use of STIS will be posted as soon as instructions for access are available. See Cindy Blaha for further details.

9. Career Center Workshops The Career Center is sponsoring resume writing workshops, opportunities for mock interviews and access to the Campbell Interest and Skill Survey (CISS) for personal interest explorations. Times for these events are posted on the pink sheet on the second Olin bulletin board. Be sure to check them out.

10. Women and Minorities The National Physical Science Consortium is sponsoring graduate fellowships for minorities and women in the physical sciences. See the poster on second Olin and Cindy Blaha in Olin 309 for further details. Application deadline is 15 November 1995.
