Comps
Presentation Talks:
(Copies of the introductory
papers are available for your review in Second Olin
Lounge)
Monday Jan 28 , 3:10-4:20 pm, Olin 02, Doug Sigfords Comps Presentation Talk, "Quantum Information Theory" "In the 20th century, the world experienced an explosion in both the dependence on and the technology surrounding computer and information technology. In fact, these fields obtained so much influence as to give rise to the term "Information Age". With all that has been accomplished, what new technologies are still do be discovered? Quantum information theory combines quantum mechanics with classical information theory to address these technologies from a new perspective. This talk will investigate quantum information theory as a powerful new way of manipulating information."
Wed., Jan 30, 3:10-4:20 pm, Olin 02, Sara Karbelings Comps Presentation Talk, "The Three Gorges Project, Physics of the Worlds Largest Dam" The Three Gorges Dam, when completed in 2009, will be both the most massive concrete structure in the world as well as the largest hydroelectric power generation project in the world. In my talk, I will explore the physics behind the dam: its structure, material properties, and power generation. Come see pictures of Sara and Akiko in China. Theyre cute. :o)
Friday, Feb 1, 3:30-4:40 pm, Olin 02, Colin Nichols's Comps Presentation Talk, "The Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse", The Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse is a physical phenomenon that, if used as a weapon, could damage or destroy electronics all across the United States in a single instant. Come see how such a powerful electromagnetic effect can be generated, how it actually affects electronic systems, and how to protect against it.
FYI
Grader needed. Bill Titus needs a Physics 113/115 grader at 5 hr/wk, starting immediately. Please contact him if you are interested. Benefits include high pay, a great opportunity to review you physics, and (according to Tyler Green's comments yesterday), the undying admiration of the students you are grading.
Pascal
Nickelson, 01, is working for Lockheed Martin. He
reports that they are looking for both new permanent hires and
summer interns. They're currently looking for people with a
background in physics, math, or computer science. The only major
requirements are United States citizenship and a willingness to
learn. If people are interested in either a permanent position or a
summer internship, they should contact Pascal (pascal.g.mickelson@lmco.com)
and he will forward their information to the appropriate people. He
can also answer any questions you may have.
