January 20-26, 2002

 Weekly Calendar

January 24, Thursday, Noon CTR (Sevy), Physics Table, Join the department staff for lunch and good company. We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:50 for the short walk to the CTR (Sevy Hall) or you can meet us there. Students off-board are invited to bring their lunch.

Comps Presentation Talks Begin

Copies of the introductory papers are available for your review in Second Olin Lounge

Friday, Jan 25 , 3:30-4:40 pm, Olin 02, Ehren Vaughn’s Comps Presentation Talk, "Quantum Chaos."

Classical chaos is a much studied subject with easily observable results: from the double pendulum to the tilt-a-whirl, chaotic systems are plentiful. But what happens when we try to model these classical systems with quantum mechanics? Combining deterministic and probabilistic theories creates an interesting conflict that has captured the interest of theorists and experimentalists alike. This talk will explore the history, theory, and applications of quantum chaos.

2002 REU and Internship Information

University of California San Diego Physics Research Experience for Undergraduates, Email:reuphysics@ucsd. Complete application packets will be considered as they arrive. Applications received after March 15, 2002 will be considered on a space available basis only. Application and information materials are available at: http://www-physics.ucsd.edu./students/reu.

Santa Fe Institute REU/NSF projects focus on adaptive computation; physics, mathematics, information science, and computational aspects of complexity; economics as a complex, adaptive system; and the life sciences including modeling of the immune system. For more information, http://www.santafe.edu/sfi/education/reus/reus02/announce.html. Deadline: February 15, 2002.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Pending confirmation of funding, the Astronomy Department and the Astrophysics group of the Physics Department will host a Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in Astronomy and Astrophysics for six students, for the ten weeks from June 3 to August 9, 2002. Applications are due Feb 15, 2002. Participants will work in Madison with researchers in the Astronomy Department and the Astrophysics group of the PhysicsDepartment.
