Wed., Feb 6, 3:10-4:20 pm, Olin 02
Ben Lueys Comps Presentation Talk, "Conducting Electrons: Orchestrating a Theory of Low-Temperature Superconductivity" Can't resist... low-temperature superconductivity comps talk! Learn why the resistance goes to zero, and how to use "BCS phase transition" in everyday speech. Talk includes feuding physicists, flawed theories, liquefied helium, death from an overturned kerosene lamp, F=ma, a defecting graduate student, levitation, the mattress effect and the only person to win two Nobel Prizes in physics. All this plus demos with liquid nitrogen!
Friday, Feb 8, 3:30-4:40 pm, Olin 02, Heather Moor's Comps Presentation Talk, "Fiber Optics and Communication" Ever wondered how you could call your parents thousands of miles away and still get almost perfect reception? The answer comes from the wonders of fiber optics. My talk will explore the history and physics of fiber optics and see what it has done to change communications systems.
