Teach for America: Teach for America is the national teacher corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in underresourced urban and rural public schools. Over the past eight years, more than 4,000 talented and dedicated individuals have joined the corps. To better meet the needs of school districts, Teach for America make a particular effort to seek bilingual Spanish speakers and math and science majors. In addition they strive to build a corps that is diverse, especially with regard to ethnic, racial and cultural background. No previous coursework is required. For more information, please visit the website at http://www.teachforamerica.org. Applications are due March 2, 1998.
Astro Summer School: Two-Week Summer Program at Mount Wilson -- Learning by Doing at an Observatory. For more info, see bulletin board. This summer school costs about $1500.
Research at Carleton: There will be four or five departmental summer research positions available for summer 1998, in addition to Joel's positions described below. The application deadlines for these positions (except for Joel's--note his deadline below!) will be in April. Stay tuned for details in next week's Radiations.
Pulsar Research: Joel has pulsar research opportunities for special projects and summer work: He is looking for one or two students (sophs [preferably] or juniors) to work with him on pulsar research starting next term. He has a variety of projects that use pulsars to study general relativity, the interstellar medium, and the pulsar emission process itself. The projects would involve the use of unix, fortran, and c programs to analyze data taken at Arecibo Observatory, PR, and possibly to gather data there.
Joel requests a minimum two-term plus one summer commitment (preferably much longer). It would be helpful to be taking or have taken Astrophysics I. Spring term would involve learning the basics of pulsars and the computer languages. This summer, data would be analyzed and if Arecibo comes on line (it is currently undergoing upgrading), we would travel there to observe and gather new data.
If you are interested, please send Joel (jweisber) an email by Friday, Feb 27, describing your background and interest.
