Radiations

February 23 - March 1, 2003

Weekly Calendar

February 25, Physics Table, Tuesday, 11:30-12:30 p.m., LDC 113 (Fireplace Room). Join the Department staff for lunch. We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:25 for the short walk to the dinning hall or you can join us there.

February 27, "Women in Action", Thursday, CMC 206, 12:00-1:00 p.m. Want to know how it feels to be a woman in science? Come and join us at faculty's reflection talks by Cindy Blaha (physics department) and Deanna Haunsperger (math department). Lunch provided. Brought to you by WHIMS (Carleton's Women in Science group)

Comps Calendar

February 24, Matt Strait, "Neutrino Oscillations", Monday, 3:10-4:20 p.m., Olin 02

February 26, Tim O'Connell, "Making Motion: The Physics of Motors from the Macro-Realm to the Micro-Realm", Wednesday, 3:10-4:20 p.m., Olin O2.

February 28, Brian Joyce, "Doomsday Asteroids: Catastrophic Extinction and its Implications for Humanity", Friday, 3:30-4:40 p.m., Olin 101.

Introductory papers of upcoming talks are available in binders in the second and third floor lounges. These will provide you with important background information and a brief outline of the talks to be presented.

FYI

Adam Joon-Ha Baraniak, Welcome to the Department! Trish Ferrett and Tom Baraniak welcomed home their adoptive son, Adam, on February 14. He was born on August 22, 2002 in Korea.

Tutor Search: An astro 110 student is looking for a tutor. Please contact Joel ASAP if you would be interested. This would be a paid position at the standard Carleton rate.

P123 "What Physicists Do" Line-up for Spring 2003 (First 5 Weeks, 1 credit , S/CR/NC): The course is open to all interested graduates of Physics 112 and 115, and those considering a major in physics are particularly encouraged to enroll. This year's speakers and their areas of interest are listed below.

April 4, Steve Thorsett, "Gamma Ray Bursts". Steve (Class of '87) is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He began his career in astrophysics studying pulsars at Princeton and Caltech and is now studying the physics of gamma ray bursts.

April 11, Martha Anderson & Chris Carlson, "Environmental Physics". Martha and Chris (both Class of '87) are scientists from Madison, Wisconsin who are using their physics backgrounds to study environmental questions here on our home planet, Earth. Martha got her Ph.D. in Astrophysics studying radio supernova remnants. She decided to use her imaging techniques to study resource use on Earth and is now a soil scientist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Chris did his graduate work in Geophysics and is now a hydrogeologist with Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources.

April 18, Marjorie Corcoran, "KTeV Experiment at Fermilab". Marjorie is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University. She is involved in the KTeV (Kaons at the Tevatron) collaboration at Fermilab. This experiment studies CP (charge-parity) violation in the decay of neutral K mesons and its implication to the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe.

April 25, John Goree, "Plasmas Acting Like Crystals". John is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa who will talk about how an ionized gas like a dusty plasma can be made to act like crystal. Dr. Goree is an American Physical Society Distinguished Lecturer in Plasma Physics.

May 2, Savas Gider, "How to Make a Hard Drive". Savas is a research scientist at Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (formerly IBM Storage Division) in San Jose. He did his graduate work in physics and applied physics, studying nanometer scale magnetism and is now working on the design and testing of recording technology for hard disk drives.

2003 REU AND INTERNSHIP INFORMATION

List of REU and internship opportunities are also on the Carleton Physics Web page at http://physics.carleton.edu/Updates/finternships.html

University of Oklahoma Department of Physics and Astronomy REU. Students will have an opportunity to work with their faculty and students in on-going research activities, involved in a series of seminars, and a variety of social activities. Deadline: March 7, 2003. http://www.nhn.ou.edu/reuhome/

The deadline for materials to be included in Radiations is noon Thursday prior to the week you would like the information to appear.
