Weekly Bulletin April 4 - April 11

Wednesday, April 5 3:10 p.m. Olin 109
PHYSICS COMPS TALK: Deepa Iyengar will give her talk entitled "Vision Engineering: Astrophysical and Psychophysical Applications of Fourier Transforms".
Friday, April 7 12:00 p.m. CTR
PHYSICS/ASTRONOMY TABLE: Meet in Olin 309 at 11:50 a.m. for the walk to the CTR or join us there. Our Physics 123 speaker, Dr. Alar Toomre, will be joining us.
Friday, April 7 1:10 p.m. Olin 137
PHYSICS 123 LECTURE: Dr. Alar Toomre, Mathematics Department, MIT will give this week's lecture entitled: "Colliding Galaxies". Dr. Toomre will be discussing the Newtonian dynamics of colliding galaxies. Dr. Toomre is one of the world's leading experts on this topic, and received the American Astronomical Society's Brouwer Award in 1993 for his contributions to the field. His computer simulations provided the first convincing evidence that many of the strangely shaped galaxies are the result of collisions or near-collision with other galaxies. The paper Dr. Toomre has suggested for background reading is available on reserve in the Science Library. All are invited to these talks.
Friday, April 7 3:30 p.m. Olin 137
PHYSICS/ASTRONOMY and MATH SPECIAL LECTURE: Dr. Alar Toomre, Mathematics Department, MIT will give a talk entitled: "The Tumbling Box". Dr. Toomre talk is on Euler's explanation of why a rigid body will only tumble about two of its three principal axes; and "Flow Past an Orbiting Mass Point". Everyone is welcome to come.

Saturday, April 8 11:00 a.m. Olin 137
PHYSICS/ASTRONOMY SPECIAL LECTURE: Dr. Alar Toomre, Mathematics Department, MIT will give a talk on the dynamics of Saturn's rings and the chaotic spiral structures in the disks of galaxies. All are welcome to come.

Monday, April 10 3:10 p.m. Olin 109
PHYSICS COMPS TALK: Susan Thysell will give her talk on Lasers.

COMMENTS:

1. Students: Did you have a great science or math teacher in secondary school in Minnesota or surrounding states? If so, the Carleton chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, would like to honor this person. Please contact Geology Professor Ed Buchwald by Friday.
