Join the Department staff for lunch.  We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:55 for the short walk to the dinning hall or you can join us there.  This will be an opportunity to meet Eric JensenÕ87, our P123 Speaker.

April 9 (Friday), P123-What Physicists Do, 1:10-2:10 p.m., Olin 141.

Eric Jensen (Õ87) Assistant Professor of Astronomy, Swarthmore College, ÒSearching for the Nearest Young Stars.Ó  Of the millions of stars within a few hundred light years of Earth, how can we find the relatively small handful (<0.1%) that are young?  And why should we care?  I will describe my search (using large databases from recent space missions and ground-based observations with telescopes in the Chilean Andes) for relatively nearby stars that are 10 to 30 million years old, the age our Sun was when the Earth formed.  Future observations of these stars will help us learn how often (and how quickly) planetary systems like our own may form around other stars.

FYI:

Building Bridges from Here to There, a three-session workshop for seniors to discuss transitions from Carleton to the real world, 4:30-5:30 pm, April 15, 22, & 29 in Hill Lounge.  Come talk about: job hunting, graduate schools, apartment searches, budgeting, insurance, and more.  Space is limited, so sign up through the career center (X4293) ASAP.
