Physics 123: This week Thomas Rossing, of Northern Illinois
University will give a talk titled, "Musical Acoustics: A Joining of Physics
and Art" at 1:10 in Olin 141. Musical acoustics applies physics to the
production of sound by musical instruments, the transmission of sound from the
source to the listener, and the perception of musical sound by the listener.
It is an attractive field of study for students with an interest in both
physics and music. This talk will briefly review the field but will
concentrate mainly on experimental techniques used to study vibrations in
musical instruments and how they produce sound. Everyone is invited to attend
and refreshments will be served.

* FYI *
POSTOL'S DONATION TO STUDENT ENTERTAINMENT FUND: Physics 123 guest speaker Ted Postol, who was here two weeks ago, has generously asked that his honorarium be used to fund other departmental activities. The money will be added to the student entertainment fund.
PHYSICS AND ASTRO PICNIC: The Physics and Astronomy picnic has been scheduled for Friday, May 9 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on the Hill of Three Oaks. We need volunteers to bring grilling equipment (such as hamburger-flippers and tongs) and to pick up the charcoal and lighter fluid, since SAGA adds a hefty charge for doing it for us. Please put your names and SAGA numbers on the white board in the Mudd lounge by Friday, May 2 at the latest if you plan to attend. Contact John Weiss if you have any questions. Hope you can make it!
