AN INVITATION TO MEET OUR CANDIDATE

You are invited to come and meet our candidate for the Department’s temporary Astronomy Position.

Dr. Maurice Clark, Murdoch University, Western Australia

Maurice just finished his Ph.D in surface physics at Murdoch University in Western Australia. Even though his degree is in physics, Maurice has a life-long love for astronomy and has been a very active amateur astronomer for many years. He has also worked as a high school teacher and as a horticulturist.

Tuesday, May 1 Noon New Dinning Hall, Meet Maurice for a student-only lunch.

Tuesday, May 1 4:30-5:30 Olin 02, Research Talk: "In Situ Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy" Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) has been widely used in UHV systems, particularly on semiconductors, and has proved to be a very valuable tool in surface analysis. However, it appears to have been ignored for in situ surface analysis. In this talk he will discuss his investigations into the feasibility of using STS to study surfaces under solution and the results of using in situ STS to investigate the adsorption of the aurocyanide ion onto carbon.

Note: As an introduction to his talk, Maurice will give a brief overview of STM and STS so that any students who do not know what an STM is and how it works will be able to follow along with his talk.

Wednesday, May 2 Noon 2nd Olin Lounge, Meet Maurice for a student-only lunch.

Weekly Calendar

Friday, May 4 12-1:00 Sevy CTR, Physics Table The Physics Table weekly meeting is an opportunity for students and staff to get together for lunch.
