May 3, Friday, 1:10-2:10, Olin 141, P123: What Physicists Do, John Stocke, University of Colorado "Observing with the Hubble Space Telescope" "I will describe my current program of HST observations which use the spectrographs to discover and study intergalactic clouds (clouds of gas between galaxies). What are they and what are they made of? Have these clouds ever formed stars? How much of the Universe is contained in these clouds (probably more than you would guess!)? Some of these questions will be answered but others only asked. I will also describe how this project helped our group at Colorado to successfully propose a new spectrograph for HST which is now under construction and is scheduled to be launched in Feb 2004."
