Weekly Calendar
May 2, Physics Table, Friday, 12:00-1:00 p.m., LDC 113 (Fireplace Room). Join the Department staff for lunch. We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:55 for the short walk to the dinning hall or you can join us there. This will be an opportunity to meet, the P123 Speaker.
May 2, P123 - What Physicists Do, Friday, 1:10-2:10 p.m., Olin 141, "How To Make a Hard Drive", Savas Gider, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. Have you ever wondered how a hard drive works? Do you want to know how all of your data can be stored on today's small laptop and palm-sized computers? Beginning with the history of hard disks and magnetic data recording techniques, Dr. Gider will tell us how we have achieved our current hard disk technologies. His recent research in nanoscale magnetic properties of materials will allow us to speculate on the sizes and data storage capacities of our future hard disks.
May 2, Goodsell Open House, Friday, 9-11 p.m., Goodsell Observatory. View planets, stars, galaxies, and nebulas through the Observatory telescopes if clear. Dress warmly! The meteorite collection will also be on display. The observatory holds open houses the first Friday of every month (exceptJuly 4 this year). The events are cancelled if it is cloudy.
May 3, St. Olaf College 2003 Science Symposium, "Global Change: Lessons from the Past, Choices for the Future". Past, present and predicted changes in the earth's physical, chemical and biological systems describes the science of global change which seeks to understand the interconnections among systems from plant communities and watersheds to ocean ice sheets and the atmosphere. In the United States &emdash; and around the world &emdash; the results of the work of global scientists are having broad impacts on discussions of environmental and public policy; many nations and citizen groups are using scientific conclusions to support the pursuit of sustainable practices.
