April 23 (Friday), Physics Table

12:00-1:00 p.m., LDC 113

Join the Department staff and students for lunch.  We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:55 for the short walk to the dinning hall or you can join us there.  This will be an opportunity to meet Bill Egbert (Ô70), our P123 Speaker.  All are welcome.

April 23 (Friday), P123-What Physicists Do,

1:10-2:10 p.m., Olin 141.

Bill Egbert (Õ70), Senior Research Specialist, 3M Company, ÒIndustrial Research and Development: Radio Frequency Identification Tag Design.Ó  3M markets for Radio Frequency Identification products have generated a broader interest in RFID applications, each with its own particular system and component requirements.  RFID tag antennas exemplify the physics hidden in a real-world problem.

April 23 (Friday), Talk: ÒNASA Explorations ProgramÓ, Dr. Mark Allen (Õ71), Director for Strategic and International Planning for NASA.

3:30 p.m., Olin 202

As Director for Strategic and International Planning, Dr. Allen is responsible for coordination of space science long-range planning, including oversight of the enterprise's advisory committees and subcommittees and development of the Space Science Enterprise Strategic Plan. This includes overseeing science theme roadmap development and interfacing with the National Research Council. He is responsible for coordination of NASA space science planning with foreign space science programs, including both bilateral and multilateral relationships. Dr. Allen also represents the enterprise in Agency-wide strategic management activities, including Agency strategic planning and policy and procedure development.

Dr. Allen graduated with Distinction in Physics and Astronomy from Carleton, and earned a Ph.D. in astronomy in 1976 at the University of Michigan. Following completion of his graduate studies, he held a postdoctoral position for two years at the University of Hawaii in the area of ultraviolet solar spectroscopy. He is the author of refereed papers in solar physics and stellar spectroscopy.

FYI:

Theresa and Ted have volunteered to be the Chancellors of Picnichood.  We will keep you posted when plans have been finalized.

Majors:  Time to start thinking about department t-shirt designs.  Please post them on the board in Second Olin Lounge.

Building Bridges from Here to There, a three-session workshop for seniors to discuss transitions from Carleton to the real world, 4:30-5:30 pm, April 15, 22, & 29 in Hill Lounge.  Come talk about: job hunting, graduate schools, apartment searches, budgeting, insurance, and more.  Space is limited, so sign up through the career center (X4293) ASAP.
