April 19, Friday, 1:10-2:10, Olin 141, P123: What Physicists Do, Congressman Rush Holt 70, "Views from a Physicist in Congress" "Why would a physicist serve in Congress? After spending many years teaching physics at Swarthmore College and many years as a leader at a major physics lab, why would I want to roll around in the dirt of politics? Actually, I grew up surrounded by politics. My father was a U.S. Senator from West Virginia. My mother was the Secretary of State of West Virginia the first woman to hold that position. Although for most of my life I applied myself to physics as a career, I have developed an appreciation for the ways of politics. As an APS Congressional Fellow in the early 80s, I began thinking about how science and Congress can better work together."

FYI
Physics Physbee Yes, it's that time of year again, time for the physics department to display its dominance on the frisbee field. Yes, it's Physbee time. Our turnout was a little low in the fall and I'm hoping we can get some new people out this year, so if you think you'll be able to play at any time this year, send me an email at morrise (whether you were on the roster in the fall or not) and I'll put you on the roster. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged. I think the roster needs to be turned in soon, and by soon I mean 3 hours ago, so write to me ASAP. Let's have some fun.
Physics Student Photo Gallery
Be enshrined in the Physics Department Lounge Hall of Fame by having your picture taken by the capable administrative staff of Maggie & Ann. We plan to take pictures of Junior and Senior Majors this week. If you are a Sophomore and plan to declare Physics as your Major, let us know and we will add your picture to the poster. Please stop by the office next week between 9am to 4pm, no reservations necessary. Digital pictures; instant results.
REU at Osaka University, Japan Indiana University is developing a new program to send a few undergraduate students to carry out a summer research project at Osaka University in Japan. This program will be an extension of the present REU program at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility, which is supported with funds from the National Science Foundation. IUCF has a long-standing relationship with our sister laboratory, the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) at Osaka. Students will gain direct research experience by working on experimental or theoretical research projects in nuclear and accelerator physics at RCNP. The summer program will also acquaint students with the norms of life in research and industry in Japan as well as introduce them to the rich cultural traditions of the Japanese people.
The program will include one week of orientation and one of follow-up in Bloomington and eight weeks in residence at Osaka University. In addition to the usual REU summer stipend, all travel and living expenses will be covered. It is primarily intended for physics majors with sophomore or junior standing and a GPA of at least 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale). Applicants should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Support
$2900 stipend for a 10 week appointment, travel and accommodation expenses provided.
If you are interested in this program please apply
immediately by contacting IUCF at offuse@iucf.indiana.edu,
by following instructions at our IUCF REU website (http://physics.indiana.edu/~reu)
or by phoning Andrew Bacher or Janet Meadows at IUCF (812-855-9365).
