April 18, P123 - What Physicists Do, Friday, 1:10-2:10 p.m., Olin 141, "Inward Bound: The frontier of knowledge in the realm of the very, very small", Marj Corcoran, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University. Some of the largest and most complex machines every constructed are used to probe matter at the tiniest scales. Over the past 30 years we have come to a deep understanding of matter on the most fundamental level. The Standard Model of particle physics stands as one of the greatest intellectual accomplishments of the human species. However, mysteries remain, some of which have close connections to the physics of the very large: astrophysics and cosmology. In this talk

I will outline our understanding of the structure of matter, what we know and what we don't know, and the experiments we are doing to learn the things we don't know. I will also talk about what it is like to be a physicist working in this exciting and ever-changing field.
