1 (Tuesday) THE GREAT BOOK GIVEAWAY 12:00 pm
Olin
Second Floor Lounge
The
physics department has been going through their books and found that they have
many duplicate copies. To make
better use of these valuable books we have decided to hold THE GREAT BOOK
GIVEAWAY. Please show up for FREE books. At noon students will draw numbers,
then each will be able to choose one book until the books are gone.
November
2 (Wednesday morning) Paul Groszewski, a representative from Washington University,
will be here to talk with students interested in engineering and the "Dual
Degree" program in engineering that we share with Washington
University. If you are at all interested
in engineering (whether or not that particular program is high on your list)
you should talk with Paul. Contact
Bruce Thomas (bthomas@carleton.edu) for schedule details.

2 (Wednesday) Student Research Presentation
3:10-4:10 pm, Olin 02
Please Join Kassie Wells and Drew Brisbin as they present their
summer research. The title of KassieÕs talk is The SunyaevÐZeldovich Effect
in Abell Cluster a3667.
The title of DrewÕs talk is Astronomical Molecular Cloud Condensation and the Delta Quadrant.
Abstract: In examining giant molecular clouds,
inferred condensation times differ from theoretical predictions by orders of
magnitude. Two theories, one based
on turbulence, the other on electro-magnetic properties, attempt to explain
this discrepancy, however, both lack thorough observational evidence. To study this phenomenon we investigate
the behavior of a typical cloud, the Delta Quadrant. Our analyses help to better characterize this type of cloud
and lend support to the turbulence theory.
November 3 (Thursday) Physics Table, 12:00-1:00 pm, LDC 113
Plan to have lunch with physics
students and staff at the LDC at noon.
We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:55 for the short walk to the
dining hall or you can meet us there.
All are welcome.
November 4 (Friday) Goodsell Observatory Open House, 7-9pm
The
Open House will be held if skies are clear. View stars, nebulas, and planets. Dress warmly!
Cancelled if cloudy.
FYI:
Applications for NSEP scholarships are now available in
the Off-Campus Studies Office, Leighton 119, for freshmen, sophomores and juniors
who are planning to study abroad in 2006-2007. The intent of the program is to provide financial support to
US undergraduates who, through study abroad, will acquire skills and experience
in less commonly-studied languages and cultures. This highly competitive scholarship is merit-based and
pays up to $10,000 per semester.
The campus deadline for completed applications is Wednesday,
January 18, 2006. Students must begin
working on the lengthy and detailed application during winter break in order to
complete it by the deadline. All
applicants will be interviewed on campus in January. Applications are due in Washington D.C. by February 10,
2006, and finalists will be notified of awards in May 2006.
The deadline for materials to be included in Radiations is noon
Thursday prior to the week you would like the information to appear. Contact mdrew@carleton.edu if you want to be added
or removed from this mailing list.
