Radiations
Department of Physics and
Astronomy
Carleton College
OCTOBER 23-29, 2005
October
24 (Monday) Ray Bunkofske from Intel will meet with
interested students in Olin 202 to discuss careers in engineering.
October
25 (Tuesday) Andrew Noble Carleton Alum and graduate student
at Cornell University will give a talk over lunch noon-1:00 pm in Olin 04.
The
title of AndrewÕs talk is Looking into Atoms
Abstract: We now have microscopes powerful enough to
resolve individual atoms. But what lies further in? What are the fundamental building blocks of the
universe? And whatever they are,
how do they interact with each other? High-energy particle physics wrestles
with these questions. We've
discovered a remarkable amount, and we're about to find out more from the Large
Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland. I want to talk about the interplay of
theory and experiment at colliders as well as the exciting new collaboration
between particle physics and cosmology.
In the course of hitting on a lot of big ideas, I'll talk about my own
research that lies at the interface of theory and experiment. Students who have completed Atomic and
Nuclear should be well equipped for a little dabbling in special relativity and
quantum mechanics, but I hope to provide a discussion of fun facts and ideas
accessible even to non-majors.
October 27 (Thursday) Physics Table, 12:00-1:00 pm, LDC 113
Plan to have lunch with physics
students and staff at the LDC at noon.
We can meet on 3rd Olin at 11:55 for the short walk to the
dining hall or you can meet us there.
All are welcome.
FYI:
The
physics department has been going through their books and found that they have
many duplicate copies. To make
better use of these valuable books we have decided to hold THE GREAT BOOK
GIVEAWAY. We will be offering these books FREE to students on Tuesday November
1 during common
time 12:00-1:00pm in the second Olin lounge.
November
2 Kassie Wells will
give a student research presentation 3:10-3:40 pm in Olin 02.
The deadline for materials to be included in Radiations is noon
Thursday prior to the week you would like the information to appear. Contact mdrew@carleton.edu if you want to be added
or removed from this mailing list.
