PHYSICS TABLE MOVED TO OLIN 04 (SEE BELOW)

PHYSICS AND PIZZA: Dave Williams and Nicolas Schonbeck will give talks about their student research over pizza at noon Thursday (common time) in Olin 04. The title of DaveÕs talk is In the Footsteps of Newton: Handcrafting Newtonian Optics.  The title of NicolasÕ talk is Nanotech Research in France.

Contact Mary Drew mdrew@carleton.edu, sign up outside Olin 331, or sign up in class by Wednesday so we can order the right amount of pizza.  All are welcome.

FYI:

Winter break student work opportunity with Tom Braniak.

Work 20 to 40 hours per week for up to 4 weeks.  Prefer (but not required) someone who has taken P235, P343, or optics.  I have several projects to choose from that may involve theory and design, electronics, and machine shop work.  Projects involve: developing an electric field mill to measure the electric field between the EarthÕs surface and the clouds, lightning detector design, working with an ultrasonic anemometer, working with an infrared hygrometer, some optical design problems, characterizing a triaxial magnetometer probe, calibrating some radiation detectors, and bringing to life some single board computers.  I doubt that there will be time to get to them all, so you will have a choice that matches your interests.  See Tom Baraniak, Olin 208, x4033, tbarania, if interested.

Winter and Spring Term and possible summer pulsar astrophysics research opportunities with Joel.

Joel is looking for sophomores or juniors interested in doing pulsar astrophysics research with him starting next term and possibly extending into the summer. Trips to Arecibo Observatory would be likely in the summer.  Details of the projects are available on our departmental website at http://apps.carleton.edu/curricular/physics/for_students/projects.  If you are interested, please submit an application to Joel by next Monday listing your relevant background and interests.

The deadline for materials to be included in Radiations is noon Thursday prior to the week you would like the information to appear. Contact mdrew@carleton.edu if you want to be added or removed from this mailing list.
