Chapter 5 Footnotes
"Who are you?" said the caterpillar.
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, "I--I hardly know, Sir, just at present--at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since that."
Summary
Alice meets the Caterpillar, and they have (for Alice) a frustrating conversation. Then the Caterpillar requires her to recite, “You are Old Father William,” after which the Caterpillar informs her that the two sides of the mushroom will make her grow taller and shorter. Alice experiments with mushroom, which causes her to first shrink and then to grow so tall that a Pigeon mistakes her for a serpent. Having at last achieved her proper height, Alice comes across the Duchess’ House.
