Bessie Gutmann

Bessie Pease Gutmann (1876–1960) was born in Philadelphia on April 8, 1876. Her most celebrated works were hand-colored prints highlighting the innocence of children. Her Alice looks very young, around three or four, instead of the more usual six or seven years old, and in her eyes Wonderland is a much safer and more comfortable world.
