The Men's Volleyball Club offers advanced intercollegiate competition for experienced players as well as instruction for beginning players. In the past years a JV squad has been created to serve all of those interested. The season runs from winter term to the third week of spring term.

The 2002-2003 Men's Volleyball Team Roster includes: Jared Hove (Captain), Blake Beal (Captain), Simon Hart, James Pickett, Andrew Ault, Jon Young, Ryan "Mars" Johnson, Peter Broad, and Leslie Coffie.

Recollections from Alum Tom Bauhs: "I remember it was lots of fun and we did well at a number of tournaments, including winning some. I remember we palyed in a conference with University of Minnestoa, Drake University, Graceland College, Western Illinois University, and Iowa and Iowa state Universities. Only Graceland and Western Illinois were varsity programs - the rest were clubs. We were usually in the middle of the conference. I do recal winning the Winter Carnival (Twin Cities) Mens A Division tounament in either 1977 or 1978. This was an open men's tournament, not a college tournament."

Recollections from Alum Stephen Young: "The Carleton Men's team won our "conference" in 1985. To do so, we were the first college team ever to defeat the University of Minnesota on their home court, beating them both during the season and in the playoff finals. Our season record was 11-1 in home and away matches, and 11-1 in games during the playoffs. We featured 7 players who played together three straight years, led by our Stanford-reject setter Carl "Icedog" Weisman and Kirk "Big Goon" Weidner, who had something like 30 kills in 33 attempts in the finals."

Recollections from Alum Gil Taylor: "I think the men’s volleyball club originated with Carl Henry ’69. When I arrived at Carleton in fall 1978, the club functioned under Carl’s aegis and competed within the Northern Intercollegiate Volleyball Conference and in USVBA tourneys up in the Cities; the club’s captains that year were seniors Larry Shelley and Gil Young. In addition to teaching me and a core of freshman in the ways of the sport (although frosh Kevin Armstrong needed no instruction, having arrived as an All-Wisconsin high school player), Shelley and Young craftily and repeatedly won bets on senior v. freshman scrimmages, paid by pitchers at the once-wet Cave."  Click Here for More from Gil Taylor

Recollections from Alum Carlos Ramon:  "Let us not forget the Dirty Half-Dozen Plus One.  The '95 JV squad won the MIAC tournament.  You can never underestimate the power of soup!  We stopped at a grocery store that bitter morning and warmed our bellies. Nick and Pat were the oldster Juniors on the squad. Gunnia, Sean, and....wow, I can't remember who the other guys were...we were all first years.  We got a write up in the 'tonian. All of their names would be in that article.  We had a great day. The varsity squad didn't play that well that day, so they were all rooting for us on the sidelines!"
