Kevin's Media Studies 110 Webpage

The goal of this webpage is to help me to write a paper in which I will discuss issues related to the classic western film and the definition of classic Hollywood cinema. To achieve this goal, the following two films will be used. Click on blue titles to learn more about these films....

Stagecoach (1939) by John Ford

and......

Hondo (1953) by James Farrow

If Stagecoach is considered the classic western, then how does Hondo fit this mode of the classic western?

Hondo and Stageoach can be compared by examining the number of lines of action. a common enemy, and the role of character commonalities.

By addressing the previous three areas, we can gain more insight into the function of the western as a genre. The most important aspect of the genre is what it says about the social atmosphere during the making of the film. We can use several areas to do this....

1. The representation of the Native American as a 'Savage'

2. The dependent role of the female love interest

3. The leading role of masculinity
