Information on Books written about and By Kurosawa:
- This is Kurosawa's autobiography, entitled Something Like an Autobiography. It is a very interesting and entertaining read even if you're more interested in the history of Japan than Kurosawa's films. Predictably, it is not just about his films, but his life. I find him to be an excellent author an storyteller, very good at articulation of events, an ability that I imagine stems from scriptwriting and of course his vast experience as a director.
- This is a book I read part of for research, but if you're interested reading fairly detailed analyses of Kurosawa's films, this book is excellent. The author, Donald Richie, really knows a lot about Kurosawa, and has written and edited several other books about him.
- Rashomon (Rutgers films in print vol. 6) contains not only the screenplay and stories on which the film was based, but a bunch of criticism, commentary and reviews of the film. Also contains Donald Richie's analysis of the film from the book above.
All of these books and a great many others about Kurosawa and his films can be found at Amazon.com. Just type in Akira Kurosawa in the blank and you will get a listing of a bunch of books, including the ones mentioned.
