Biology 236: Plant Biology

Instructions For Accessing Fabio, The College Server From Hulings Hall

In order to store large computer files you have been assigned an account on the server Fabio. This is a great place to store files of images that you capture from microscopes this term. Also, this is where you will submit all writing assignments. This is different from having an account on the VAX where you already have an account for e-mail and other uses. The first set of instructions that follow provide you with a shortcut for logging into Fabio using Macintosh computers in HH 103 and 104. These are followed with another set of instructions, if for some reason the Fabio User alias is missing from the desktop of the computer on which you are working.

A. Logging Into Fabio Using Its Desktop Alias

1. Double click on the Fabio User alias that is located on the right side of the desktop.

2. You should get a login screen that asks for a (User) Name and a Password. Enter your username and password, writing over whatever default username appears on the screen. For our class, we will all have the same user name, plantbiology. Our class password is veggie.

3. If you are successful in logging into Fabio (i.e. the computer will create an authenticated connection), the tree in the upper right-hand corner of the screen will get leaves and the Fabio User Files window will appear on the screen. Please do not change the password if you notice that option!!!!

4. A Bio 236 folder should be visible in the Fabio User File window. (If the Bio 236 Folder does not show up, go to the View menu and select "by Name." For some reason, the folder does not always show up in View by Icon.)

5. Open the Bio 236 folder by double clicking on its icon. Within this folder, you and your lab partner(s) can create your own folder to keep your images on. To do this, click on file in the menu and select the item new folder. Be sure to give your folder a short distinctive name.

6. As the term progresses, you may use your folder within the Common folder to store imaging (or other) files. To do this, save your open files directly into the Fabio folder of choice using the "Save As" command under "File". You will be able to use the window that then appears to open your folder on Fabio (via the desktop). If for some reason you cannot access the server, you may temporarily save and store your files on the hard disk in the Bio 236 folder (depending on which computer you use, you may need to create this folder), which is in the "Courses" folder.

7. To "turn in" imaging assignment(s) for grading, drag the closed file(s) into your folder within the Bio 236 Homework folder on Fabio. Be aware that once you drag the files into Homework, you cannot retrieve them (unless you ask me nicely to send them back to you). Therefore, you should make a copy of your homework assignments to keep in your own folder, in case something goes awry. Always make sure to label your file with your name and the assignment name or number. Note: If you have accounts for other classes, you will probably have more than one folder. It is up to you to be careful to hand assignments into the correct folders.

8. DO NOT FORGET TO LOGOUT! It is extremely important that you remember to Logout of Fabio. If you do not successfully logout, your files will be open for anyone who sits at that computer after you. In addition, your password could be changed without your consent and you will lose valuable work time trying to figure out what has happened. To Logout, Save your work and simply go back to the tree at the top of the screen and click. Drag down to Logout and release.

B. Logging Into Fabio Using The Chooser

1. Click on the multi-colored apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and select Chooser from the menu that appears.

2. Click on the Appleshare icon in the upper left of the box that appears. Scroll down to and click on Public Labs ACNS in the lower left box. Then double click on the name Fabio in the box on the right side of the window.

3. At this point, you should get the login screen described in step #2 above. Login as described above.

4. In the next window, select (highlight) Fabio User Files in the box that appears and click on the OK button. Close the Chooser window.

5 Now the Fabio User Files icon will appear on the right side of the desktop near the hard drive, floppy disk, and other icons.

6. Click on it to open the Fabio window. At this point, you should be at Step #4 above.
