Carleton College Welcomes President Clinton to 126th Commencement
Northfield, Minn. United States President William Jefferson Clinton will address 423 bachelor of arts degree candidates at Carleton Colleges 126th annual commencement exercises on Saturday, June 10.
Carleton will present honorary degrees to two distinguished persons: George H. Dixon, retired CEO and chairman of US Bancorp and trustee emeritus of Carleton, will receive an honorary doctorate of laws; and Bruno Nettl, a renowned ethnomusicologist and former visiting faculty at Carleton, will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters.
Each honorary degree recipient will also address the graduates in outdoor ceremonies beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the lawn west of Hulings Hall. Three English majors from the graduating class will speak as well. Kathryne Beebe of Belton, Mo., will deliver a speech titled "The Best of All Possible Graduations." Faisal Mohyuddin of Rolling Meadows, Ill., and Sachin Patel of Shakopee, Minn., will present a speech in dialogue.
This is the first time a sitting U.S. president has visited Carleton. Carleton President Stephen R. Lewis, Jr. noted that Mr. Clintons visit is a unique opportunity for Carletons seniors and their families. "It is a tribute to Carleton and the state of Minnesota that President Clinton has accepted our invitation to address our graduates at one of the most celebratory occasions in their young lives," he said.
The commencement exercises will be held outside regardless of weather conditions. Those attending are encouraged to dress for the weather.
Consistently ranked among the nations top liberal arts institutions, Carleton is a private, co-educational college of 1,850 students located 40 miles south of Minneapolis and St. Paul. High academic standards, an excellent teaching faculty, and a diverse student body contribute to Carletons outstanding reputation.
