Carleton College is a national, highly selective four-year, undergraduate liberal arts college granting the degree of bachelor of arts. Its students are among the brightest young people in the nation. They are highly competitive, but they do so primarily by competing against their own standard of excellence. Theres not a lot of competition among Carleton students for grades or performance they are very supportive of one anothers activities. As Carleton President Stephen R. - Carleton-funded student organizations include: 32 community service groups, 21 music/art groups, 21 cultural, ethnic, and religious groups, 10 publications, nine educational groups, seven political groups, five environmental/outdoor groups, four pre-professional groups, and an AM/FM radio station.
- Carleton competes in the NCAA Division III, Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The College fields 26 varsity athletic programs.

- The 400 acres immediately surrounding campus comprise the Cowling Arboretum, filled with running, walking, and cross-country skiing trails. Students in the natural sciences also use the arboretum for research.
