Y2K Network Information

ACNS and ACS plan to power down campus network electronics and disconnect Carleton's servers from the Internet starting at 5:00pm, Thursday December 30th.

We expect service to be restored by the evening of Saturday, January 1, if no major problems have been found.

This step is being taking for three reasons:

  • To reduce the drain on emergency generators;
  • To protect equipment and data from power fluctuations in the event of a power outage;
  • To protect against heightened activity by hackers.

Although the above risks are small, the need for campus networking services on New Year's Eve and New Year's morning should be even smaller.

Note: This outage means that you will be unable to use the campus Web site as a source of information about Carleton's Y2K status immediately before and after the new year. If you need current information during this time, please use the campus Y2K hotline: 646-7Y2K [7925]
