A Carleton Y2K Checklist

Right away:

  • If you rely on a computer or computer-based device that is more than 3 or 4 years old, and you have not been in contact with computer staff about it, please contact your support person in ACNS or ACS for help evaluating your equipment.

  • If you use a program that is unusual (i.e. you may be the only person on campus using it), and you have not been in contact with computer staff about it, please contact your support person in ACNS or ACS for help determining if your software has Y2K problems.

During December:

  • Schedule any end-of-year or end-of-month computing tasks as early as possible in the month. Try to avoid planning any essential tasks for the last week of December and the first week of January.

The Week of December 27:

  • Backup essential information on your computer. Files stored on campus servers will be fully backed up this week.

  • Don't plan any computing tasks for the weekend of the 31st. Central systems and the campus network will be unavailable as of 5pm, December 30. More...

  • Prepare for the possibility that your computer or some campus servers may be unavailable when you return on January 3rd. Print out any essential materials you will need to do your job.

  • When you leave on Thursday, December 30, turn all of your computer equipment off, unless you have been advised otherwise by computing staff. Unplug all computers and printers. Do not unplug phones or network cables.

The Week of January 3:

  • Before turning on your computer, check the designated campus Y2K information sources for any issues you need to be aware of.

  • If you are going to need to use particular systems or applications for the start of classes on Wednesday, test them on Monday and Tuesday to make sure that everything is working as expected.
