Housing and Residential Life
Residence halls are an integral part of the Carleton learning environment. Living in them provides informal opportunities for students to learn more about themselves and others. Carleton's goal is to provide a living-learning community that enhances student growth and development through individual and group experiences in the residential setting. Professional and student Resident Assistant staff members live in the residence halls to help plan social and educational activities, facilitate learning opportunities and assist students.
As a residential college, Carleton requires that all students must live in College operated residences and participate in the College dining plan. Students with special dietary needs should address their concerns to the Director of Dining Services.
The College offers a variety of housing options because it recognizes that residential options are desirable and beneficial for students. Housing opportunities include traditional residence halls, suites, houses, apartments and the Northfield Option. The Northfield Option is a program that allows a very limited number of students to live in non-College owned housing. Students must receive prior approval from Residential Life to be eligible for this option. Students who are married or have dependent children living with them are exempted from the residency and board requirements.
