CNN Contributor Garrick Utley to Discuss His Life in Journalism
Correspondent Will Read From His Memoir of Broadcast News

Northfield, Minn. — Garrick Utley, CNN contributor and former ABC and NBC news correspondent, will discuss his life in broadcast journalism and read from his recently-published memoir, "You Should Have Been Here Yesterday: A Life in Television News," at Carleton College on Thursday, May 17 at 8 p.m. in Severance Great Hall. From 4:30 to 5 p.m., Utley will be available to sign his book in the Carleton College Bookstore. The events are free and open to the public.

Utley graduated from Carleton in 1961 with a B.A. degree in political science and has served on Carleton’s Board of Trustees since 1982. The College awarded him an honorary degree in 1979.

As a CNN contributor, Utley reports on and analyzes stories of national and international significance. Before joining the cable network in 1997, Utley served for three years as ABC News’ chief foreign correspondent. Prior to that, he spent 30 years with NBC News covering international affairs and reporting from more than 70 countries.

From 1982 to 1987, Utley served as NBC’s chief foreign correspondent and garnered several awards, including the Overseas Press Club’s Edward R. Murrow Award for his reports on Soviet-American relations and the George Foster Peabody Award for his contributions to the program "Vietnam: Ten Years Later." While at NBC, he also moderated "Meet the Press," anchored "Sunday Today," hosted the monthly newsmagazine "First Tuesday" and anchored "NBC Magazine."

Utley’s memoir chronicles his travels around the world, from Vietnam to Belize, Russia to Rhodesia, in search of important news stories. It provides a sweeping history of network news and an insider’s look into the business of television news. "You Should Have Been Here Yesterday" is available for purchase at the Carleton Bookstore, 507.646.4153.
